What is A Celebration of Art about?
It is exactly that – a celebration of the art that is being created in Harrow by creative people living and working in Harrow.
Running from Monday 13th February until Thursday 2nd March this exhibition displays the talent of over 70 different artists from 8 years to 88 years old. The work is diverse and vibrant, very reflective of Harrow people and it deserves to be celebrated.
Over 250,000 people live in Harrow. There is a thriving community of artists, art groups and creative enterprises in the borough, but only one small facility offered as a free public space designated for displaying visual art exhibitions – the White Cube Gallery in Harrow Art Centre. In 2022 it was decided to close this gallery space and repurpose it into an office. There had been no consultation and the plans had been put in place without informing those artists and community groups who use the gallery.
When we heard about this Harrow Open Studio artists launched a campaign to save the gallery for its intended use. The gallery was initially set up in 2012 with lottery funding by a group of artists in Harrow and it was saved from closure by a group of artists in Harrow. If we want to ensure that it stays as a designated art gallery, we need to use it. If we want to show that there is a need for a better facility for the hundreds of thousands of people in Harrow we need to fill it to bursting with the art that is already happening in Harrow. This exhibition is part of this campaign, to celebrate the gallery and the art in Harrow, to show the people of Harrow that they are a creative force, to introduce them to the fact that they have a gallery they can use and to work towards a better public gallery in the future.
Come and see what your neighbours have created and tell everybody about it.
