2016

Throughout May 2016 the Harrow Arts Centre at Hatch End hosted a free taster exhibition of work by Harrow Open Studios’ artists in The Gallery and corridors.

Work includes paintings, prints, bronze work, woodwork, ironwork, ceramics, jewellery, glasswork and mixed media exhibits.

There was a preview of the exhibition on the evening of Friday 29 April with Harrow Open Studios artists and sponsors present. In a short talk, Councillor Jean Lammiman said she has been inspired by the creativity of Harrow Open Studios and “feels an affinity with it”. She reflected that “as mayor I supported the first Harrow Open Studios nine years ago, and I will be taking brochures away with me tonight to put around the Harrow Council”.

Representing the artists, painter Christine Spring thanked sponsors, saying that “without them Harrow Open Studios would not exist”. She also expressed appreciation to the Harrow Arts Centre for showcasing the work of Harrow Open Studios artists.

The ninth annual Harrow Open Studios event will take place from Saturday 4th June to Monday 6th June, and Saturday 11th June to Sunday 12th June 2016. Among nearly 40 artists exhibiting in 25 studios are eight new members.

We are happy to welcome back Cheryl Gould, sculptor and printmaker and one of the founder-members of Harrow Open Studios. Her sculpture is inspired by the human form and the pieces created can be realised in a variety of media, such as clay, which can be fired, or cast into plaster, resin, or bronze. Much of her work reflects her interest in dance, theatre and performance. She has workshops located at the Harrow Arts Centre in Hatch End and the Frobisher Studio at Bushey Museum.
Exhibiting with Cheryl in Pinner are Gabriella Hargrave who is expert at oil, painting, acrylic painting, pastels, drawing and small murals. Lucyna Michaelec-Dixon produces prints and paintings inspired by pattern, form, colour and texture seen in nature, figures and architecture. Tammy Murray is a mixed media artist and jeweller whose jewellery boxes and other works are inspired by nature.

Mallika Gardiner will be exhibiting her paintings and drawings at Harrow Weald and says many are inspired by by the human form, portraiture and the universal bond between a mother and her child. Kate Thomas is a painter and printmaker based nearby in Central Harrow. Lisa Hurcum, who works on ceramics and decorative arts, describes her work as being inspired by the Omega Workshop style of the Bloomsbury artists, and also by Raoul Dufy and other post-impressionists.

Doug Campbell, based at Caimbeul’s Forge in Bushey, uses traditional blacksmithing techniques to create traditional and contemporary hand-forged steel, drawing inspiration from Art Nuevo and traditional tribal art.

The Open Studios presents a wonderful opportunity to meet these artists and be introduced to their work.
