Painter / Mixed Media Artist

Contemporary artist Palak Patel finds inspiration from her Indian heritage and from everyday observed patterns and shapes. The artist’s process favours acrylics and mixed media such as modelling paste and gel which is applied in thick textural strokes that give her artworks a rich, three dimensional quality. Gold and silver leaf is another important element for Palak’s artworks, a signature statement that adds texture and reflections of light which change depending on the time of day you are observing the piece.

Palak is continuously experimenting with materials to find new ways to express texture on canvas and endeavours to evoke feelings from the art she creates.

Jeweller

Lizzy creates British botanical jewellery. Her passion is to create keepsakes with meanings, stories and a fairy-tale feel to them. Her work has developed from her children picking flowers to taking your flowers from your wedding day to that special walk.

Lizzy grows some of her collection from seed, dried the flowers and then encapsulates them inside the glass. Spending a lot of time flower arranging on the miniature to create a wearable memory or something that evokes your own childhood feeling captured in these small glass worlds.

Lizzy will be showing you how the flowers are dried, which methods are best to dry different flowers. Then how the flowers are arranged inside the glass before they are turned into keepsakes. Available on open studio days.

Sculptor, Mixed Media

I would describe myself as a city dwelling country girl – whilst spending many years working in London following a career in publishing design, as a farmer’s daughter my heart is fuelled by all things natural and hand crafted. I work from my cabin studio, next to an unkempt plant and creature filled pond at the bottom of my garden, I am both calmed and driven by the natural beauty that surrounds me.

As an experienced designer and art director, I have worked across a broad range of magazines over the years – from client-based contract publishing to fast paced newspaper weeklies, from glossy interior monthlies to glamorous haute-couture and stylish textile specials.

After a decade of raising a family and exploring other areas of art and design, such as print making and ceramics, I now have the privilege of working with, and nurturing, the creative aspiration of pupils at several private schools. What better combination to inspire me than growing these budding creative seeds simultaneously!

Textiles / Printmaker

Colette is a fabric designer, screen printer and stitcher. Using traditional methods and slow techniques, Colette creates modern tactile fabric accessories and quilts, these are designed to be used and loved adding to the tactile nature of daily life. Using only natural fabrics and with a love of linen thread, texture is created using embroidery, slow stitching and layers of fabrics and colour.

Inspired by nature, architecture and styles from the 1930s -1950s Colette’s textile designs are simplistic and fresh. If you’re a stitcher, there are fabrics and kits to choose from and patterns to make small accessories. There are free tutorials and tips available on her website. Look out for screen printing workshops too.

I will be running an embroidery project to involve the community and record their feelings about living / visiting Harrow. Details are yet to be finalised, but I’m working with other HOS textile artists.
This will be a ‘live’ project and I’ll be stitching it on the days I am open, this is free to the public.

Jeweller

“Ancient cultures, the natural world and occasionally the fantastical form the primary inspiration for Helen’s jewellery, She works with a form of silver that behaves like a clay and fires to solid silver. Because of its properties, it gives an unparalleled depth of texture and access to a range of organic forms which are difficult to achieve through traditional jewellery making techniques.

Helen’s work is unique in its detail and style, expressed in fine and sterling silver and , sometimes incorporating delicate translucent colours from glass enamels, or gems and pearls.”

Painter

Sandhya’s journey in this world, and in the world of art, began in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the Dehradun valley, India. It was perhaps the serene surroundings, besides something special within, that created an instant bond between her and the magnificence of colours and hues around her. The bond and the urge to recreate some of the magic of Nature, manifested with early experimentation through lines and colours on walls and floors. The urge only grew more intense with time, and so did her expressions and experimentation, albeit, with more formal media, methods and training.

Her formal grounding in art can be traced to two of the most famous schools in India, Shantiniketan and Baroda (now Vadodara). She walked her early formal paces in art under the guidance of Dr. Dwijen Sen, a disciple of the renowned artist of Shantinikatan, Nandlal Bose. Her formal exposure to art was rounded off for her under the tutelage of Proffesor Ranbir Saxena, a well known landscape artist and a student of Bendre. These formal endeavours culminated in 1977, when she earned a Masters in Fine Arts.
But, that culmination was only to formal learning. She never stopped at that, and neither did she permit the formalism of structured education to constrain her creativity and urge to break new grounds.
She has nearly fifty years of professional experience behind her, rubbing shoulders with some of the top contemporary painters of her times.

She believes in art working for upliftment of humanity in general and likes her art to spread a sense of positivity, harmony and happiness across the globe.

Painter

Born and raised in India, Smita has experienced ancient roots and vibrant culture closely, sparking interest in art very early on. Her love for painting and colors since childhood only got deeper by internalizing the various art forms in the country as she traveled around, read & learnt about them.

She pursued a Masters in Fine Arts to help learn some intricacies. Smita says – Art is a very powerful tool. It tells stories without speaking a word. It can evoke a tsunami of emotions in your heart or can calm and relax your mind. It not only opens up creativity and imagination, but also helps develop focus and concentration. Her paintings are her best friends, philosophers and guides and she enjoys every moment when she has a brush in hand. She primarily draws inspiration from nature, spiritualism and women. These subjects have immense depth and are close to her heart. Most of her paintings are mixed media; She experiments with textures, layers, inks, lines, patterns to create a unique piece each time.

She has been painting for 18 years. Paintings motivate me constantly to live my dream – creating art and spreading my wings on canvas , she says. Painting is love, work, play, meditation and prayer for her.
