This is the second year for HOS to organise and curate a special exhibition for young creatives in Harrow and beyond. Inspired by the archive collection at Headstone Manor and Museum and supported by Harrow Art Centre, this years theme was Entertainment
Come and join these talented people and help to encourage and respect their artistic development by visiting this free exhibition at Harrow Art Centre White Cube Gallery.
Art will also be displayed at the Green Hill Art POD, behind the Lloyds Bank building off Station Road.
Why is it important that we showcase young creatives?
Since 2010 the take up of creative subjects at exam level has fallen by 47%, schools are reducing access to arts subjects and central and local governments are systematically reducing spending on the arts. Harrow Open Studios wants to develop opportunities for emerging visual artists to be displayed and celebrated by everyone.
The gallery was initially set up in 2012 with lottery funding by a group of artists in Harrow and it was saved from closure in 2022 by a group of artists in Harrow. If we want to ensure that it stays as a designated art gallery, we need to use it. If we want to show that there is a need for a better facility for the hundreds of thousands of people in Harrow we need to fill it to bursting with the art that is already happening in and around Harrow. This exhibition is part of Harrow Open Studios’ aim, to celebrate visual art in Harrow, to show the people of Harrow that they are a creative force, to introduce them to the fact that they have a gallery they can use and to work towards a thriving public gallery in the future.
Come and see what our young poeple have created and tell everybody about it.

Over 250,000 people live in Harrow. There is a thriving community of artists, art groups and creative enterprises in the borough, but only one small facility offered as a free public space designated for displaying visual art exhibitions – the White Cube Gallery in Harrow Art Centre.

What is A Celebration of Art about?
It is exactly that – a celebration of the art that is being created in Harrow by creative people living and working in Harrow.
Running from Monday 13th February until Thursday 2nd March this exhibition displays the talent of over 70 different artists from 8 years to 88 years old. The work is diverse and vibrant, very reflective of Harrow people and it deserves to be celebrated.
Over 250,000 people live in Harrow. There is a thriving community of artists, art groups and creative enterprises in the borough, but only one small facility offered as a free public space designated for displaying visual art exhibitions – the White Cube Gallery in Harrow Art Centre. In 2022 it was decided to close this gallery space and repurpose it into an office. There had been no consultation and the plans had been put in place without informing those artists and community groups who use the gallery.
When we heard about this Harrow Open Studio artists launched a campaign to save the gallery for its intended use. The gallery was initially set up in 2012 with lottery funding by a group of artists in Harrow and it was saved from closure by a group of artists in Harrow. If we want to ensure that it stays as a designated art gallery, we need to use it. If we want to show that there is a need for a better facility for the hundreds of thousands of people in Harrow we need to fill it to bursting with the art that is already happening in Harrow. This exhibition is part of this campaign, to celebrate the gallery and the art in Harrow, to show the people of Harrow that they are a creative force, to introduce them to the fact that they have a gallery they can use and to work towards a better public gallery in the future.

Nicole explains her piece Covid Globe Human Touch: “During the Lockdown it became more and more apparent how important touch is to humans. The fact that we were unable to touch loved ones, shake hands with strangers, occupy the same close quarters with other humans, gave the importance of human touch sharp focus.
Clay is a medium that requires human touch to make forms, be it on the wheel or by modelling the clay with ones hands. It is the only medium that after it is fired is virtually indestructible and can retain the finger print of the creator through thousands of years so that another human can touch it.
Covid-19 removed our ability to touch each other, but my finger prints on this hand built globe and be touched by other humans across time and space, linking us together. Covid-19 has been created by the human touch on the earth and if we don’t accept our impact on our environment and make changes, we will turn the whole world into a place that will destroy us.
This globe was made in response to both these reflections on our situation. It was made as part of a community clay project I set up for the residents of my street, and displayed on the communal roundabout in the street with the clay pieces my neighbours made, which I had fired and glazed for them.”
